Work Permit Authority
A minor under 16 years of age may not be employed without a work permit signed by the superintendent of schools.
Conditions for signature
If school is in session or you are attending summer school, you must be enrolled in school and passing a majority of your courses.
If school in not is session, you must furnish a certificate signed by the principal of the school last attended showing you have satisfactorily completed Kindergarten to grade 8.
If school is in session, you may have only one work permit at any given time. You may have two work permits for the summer vacation period

What you need before applying for a work permit:
- You must be accompanied by a parent or guardian
- You must be at least 14 years old
- You must bring your last report card, Social Security Card, and Birth Certificate or Passport
- You must have assurance from your employer that you will be placed in that job once your Work Permit is processed
- You must know your job title, address and phone number of your employer as well as a contact person's name
What happens after you leave the Superintendent's Office:
- Your permit is mailed to Augusta for processing (usually taking 3-5 business days to process)
- We will call when the work permit arrives. (Legally you cannot begin your job until you have the work permit in hand)
- You must bring the permit to your Employer where it will stay until you resign

at the school the student attends
or
at the Superintendent's Office, 60 Court Street, Auburn.
