Public School Operated and Administered Special Education Programs

Philosophy:
Every child is educationally and emotionally capable of effecting changes in his / her life.

Description:

WHO

* Special education students with diagnosed emotional or behavioral difficulties.
* Grades 4 - 12
* Eligibility - Unions 29 & 30; S.A.D 52; Auburn and Lewiston
                  * other systems as openings are available

WHEN

* 175 School days / following school calendar of Auburn
* Extended school year programming for middle and elementary school students to maintain education and behavioral skills
* School day 9:00am - 3:00pm
* Average stay 18 months. (Diagnostic to 2 years)

WHY

* Students have not been successful in their sending schools.
* Students need a small structured setting to acquire social and academic skills in preparation for return to the community.

* Academic
          - Individual and small group work available at individual grade levels.
          - Emphasis on basic skills
          - Transition planning; including prevocational and vocational information.

* Psychological
           - Consulting to staff and parents
           - Small group work
           - Referral to community psychological and psychiatric services

* Social
           - Individual and small group social skills training.
           - Coordination of community resources.
           - Linking to after school programs.

* Recreation
           - physical education instructions
           - small group recreation activities
           - personal fitness
           - hobby groups
           - bowling
           - swimming
           - chess club
           - arts and crafts

Differences from Sending School Programs

* Special purpose day school for students providing emotional / behavioral supports.
* All staff special education trained / certified or licensed>
* Class size - ration generally five (5) students / one (1) staff (including Educational Technicians)
* Small school (maximum 45 students).
           1. Elementary classroom
           2. Middle school classrooms
           3. High school classrooms
* Social work services
           - group and individual work with students and families
           - working with problems in community that impact school success
           - mobilizing school and community resources to enable students to benefit from education.

HOW

* Referral through each school system's P.E.T. process.
              - Admissions Board reviews all applications for possible placement.
