What We're Up To

Managed by our Food Corps members and supported by kitchen staff, the School-Based Food Hub conducts regular taste tests and cooking classes in our three districts.

In our cafeterias we have led more than 30 taste tests in the 2025-26 school year, collecting feedback from over 6,000 students.

These events introduce students to Maine Harvest of the Month local foods and help introduce basic nutrition education in an accessible, interesting, and exciting way.

During these events the School-Based Food Hub makes a point to include culturally important menu items and include student groups in our recipe creation, supporting our goal of inclusive and relevant offerings.

Some student led efforts that have been menued include jerk chicken, breakfast smoothies, and chicken shawarma.

One of the ways we emphasize our connection with  local foods is by visiting nearby farms and taking an inside look at how they plan, grow, and process the foods we eat.

To share the message of what the School-Based Food Hub is doing we have participated in a number of events including Fall Harvest, Fruit and Veggie Bingo Night, and Taste the Harvest.

The SBFH has also hosted our own events such as a Pop-Up Farmers Market and Staff Training.
