Special Education

Every student with a disability has a right to a free, appropriate public education. The Auburn School Department assures that every child of school age eligible for special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act will receive an appropriate program of instruction and supportive services designed to meet his or her individual needs. Special education services are provided to Auburn students by certified and/or licensed professionals or supervised support staff at no cost to parents.

Special Services are provided in accordance with the Maine Unified Special Education Regulation, Birth to Age Twenty-two, Chapter 101. Also available for download is the Procedural Safeguards Notice.

The Auburn School Department seeks to ensure that all children residing in the jurisdiction between the ages of 5 and 22 years who are in need of special education and related services, even if they are advancing from grade to grade, are identified, located and evaluated at public expense. Please see the Auburn School Department′s  Child Find Responsibilities.

There are many local and state resources available to assist families with children with disabilities. Click here for a list of special education resources and upcoming workshop opportunities available to families throughout the State of Maine.

Empowering Every Learner, Embracing Every Difference.

Our vision is to create an inclusive educational environment where every student with diverse learning needs is supported, valued, and empowered to achieve their full potential. We are dedicated to leading with compassion, innovation, and collaboration to support a community where the diversity of our students is respected and connection with our families is valued.

Key Pillars of Our Vision:

Inclusivity and Equity: We strive to ensure that all students have equal access to high-quality education and resources. We are committed to celebrating diversity and fostering a sense of belonging for every learner.
Collaboration and Partnership: We recognize the importance of working together with families, educators, and community partners to support individualized education plans that focus upon the whole student.

Innovation and Excellence: We are dedicated to continuously improving our practices by embracing innovative strategies, and evidence-based interventions. Our goal is to adapt our approaches to meet the evolving needs of each of our students.

Empowerment and Advocacy: We will advocate for the rights and needs of students with disabilities, ensuring that their voices are heard and their needs are met. Our leadership team will focus on encouraging students to become active participants in their own educational journey by understanding their strengths, advocating for their needs, and developing the skills for a successful transition into the community as productive adults.

We envision a future where very student with special needs is provided with the tools, support, and opportunities to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Our leadership team will work to create a transformative impact on the lives of our students, their families and our community.
